Emel Kurhan, (born in 1977) spent her childhood travelling the world and living in different countries with her diplomat parents.
After studying in Paris at the Studio Berçot and the Ecole du Louvre, Emel started her career in the fashion world, working for, among others, Christian Lacroix in printed textiles, lino cutting and silk screening.
Several prestigious fashion houses later, Emel and her sister Yaz set up the accessories brand Yazbukey, twice awarded the Prix L’Andam by the French Ministry of Culture.
In parallel to her work in the fashion world, Emel taught at the Fine Art school of Reykjavik (Ihi), at the Studio Berçot in Paris, and at Bilgi University in Istanbul.
She has had two radio programmes: first of all “Tutti Frutti” on Dinamo FM and then on Radio Eksen as well as a monthly column in Turkish Elle and Marie Claire.
In 2010, as she and her sister celebrated ten years of Yazbukey, Emel decided to bow out of the fashion world gracefully and to concentrate on art, her other passion. Her first solo exhibition was called ''Devinimsiz seyahat - Travelling without moving'' and was held in March 2011.
The same year, she took part in a group show entitled 'ultramemoires-4'' at the French Institute in Istanbul.
In September 2012 Emel wrote and illustrated two guides to her two favourite cities, “Emel loves Istanbul” and “Emel loves Paris”
Emel's second solo exhibition was ''Tales of a Fairy'' at the Galerie Nivet-Carzon in Paris in March 2012. and her third show, in May 2013, was called ''Fantastik” at Artsumer, in Istanbul.
İn 2014,Emel did a side-project called ''Maybe Tomorrow'' with a flowershop in İstanbul
Then her fifth exhibition ''Four seasons of solitude''(2015) and sixth ''A new world''(2016) were held in Gallery ÖktemAykut-İstanbul.
She works and live in İstanbul.
